Kenya is basically an agricultural country and
the economy depends largely on agriculture. Tea was introduced in
kenya in 1903. Commercial tea growing, however, was possible only
after the 1920s. Tea here is grown mainly in the high lands. The major
production is concentrated in the west of the Rift. In the high lands,
tea is grown from 5500 ft to 6000 feet above sea level.

Kenyan tea started being exported from 1978 and
have been stable till 1989, only with an exception of 1984-85.
Climate
and condition
The tea industry of Kenya is under the overall
umbrella of the Tea Board of Kenya. After the common Tea Research
Institute of Uganda, Kenya & Tanzania ceased to exist in 1980, its
Tea Board took over the functions of the institute.
Tea Growing Areas
The principal tea growing districts of Kenya are
located between Mount Kenya and Lake Victoria on either side of the
Rift Valley. Kericho is the main tea growing district of in the
west followed by Nandi, Sotik and Kisii around Kiricho. Lamuru is the
main tea growing district in the east. Other areas are Meru, Nyeri,
Kitale.

- Planted Hectrage Cess: K Shs
2.50 per hectare.
- Local Government Agricultural
Produce Cess: 1% of the gross income to the farmer.
- Presumptive Income Tax:
(reintroduced since w.e.f. January 1, 1996): 2.5% of Gross Income
to the farmer.
