| 7% increase in tea exports
Sri Lanka exported 215 million kilos for the first nine months of the year, an increase of seven per cent over last year's figures. Value of exports were however substantially higher at 22%.
Export earnings of Rs. 38 billion have been made up by the increased quantity and a higher unit FOB value of Rs. 179.83 per kg as against Rs. 158.14 last year.
The CIS absorbed 20% of all teas shipped (42.9 million kg) and emerged as the prime destination for Ceylon Tea. Key Middle-Eastern markets such as Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Tunisia have all increased their import quantities this year.
